Texas Tech Depth Chart: Hammond, Castellanos Eligibility and Dickey’s Ankle Injury

Castellanos was unavailable at Colorado

Thomas Castellanos could not play after a Kentucky appeals court dissolved the temporary protection that had allowed his participation. Texas Tech’s spokesperson confirmed his absence for the Colorado game to local reporters.

For that game, Kirk Francis moved into the backup role behind Hammond. Lloyd Jones III traveled separately to Colorado and was listed third, according to the Associated Press. Francis took the final snap.

The hearing was rescheduled from October 9 to October 14, according to Red Raider Sports and the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. His eligibility for the Arizona State game remains unresolved ahead of that hearing.

Dickey’s injury affects short-yardage options

Cameron Dickey left the Colorado game in the first half with an ankle injury. In his postgame comments, Joey McGuire said X-rays were negative and described a suspected high ankle sprain. On October 6, McGuire estimated a two-to-three-week absence. That is a recovery estimate; his exact return date remains unconfirmed.

McGuire explained that losing Dickey during the game, alongside Castellanos’s absence, reduced the short-yardage and wildcat options available to the offense. That makes their availability relevant beyond the ordinary quarterback and running-back rotation.

J’Koby Williams led Texas Tech with 88 rushing yards at Colorado. His production is useful context for the backfield while Dickey recovers, though the game does not establish the carry split for Arizona State.

Arizona State is next after the bye

Tech hosts Arizona State on October 17 at 2:30 p.m. CT on FOX. The bye gives the staff time to adjust its offensive packages and assess injured players.
