AUSTIN, Texas — As the Texas Longhorns prepare for the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl, the roster is undergoing significant changes with the opening of the winter transfer portal window.

On Monday, multiple reports confirmed that running back CJ Baxter and quarterback Trey Owens have officially entered the transfer portal.

Key Departures

CJ Baxter (RB)

A former five-star recruit in the Class of 2023, Baxter began the 2025 season with high expectations but was limited to just eight games due to a lingering knee injury. With the emergence of Quintrevion Wisner and the depth in the running back room—bolstered by the recent hiring of Jabbar Juluke—Baxter will seek a fresh start elsewhere. He finishes his Texas career with over 1,000 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns.

Trey Owens (QB)

The redshirt freshman quarterback has also elected to transfer. With Arch Manning firmly entrenched as the starter for the foreseeable future and highly touted recruit Dia Bell arriving in 2026, Owens faced a crowded path to playing time. He appeared in two games this season in relief duty.

Johntay Cook II (WR)

Wide receiver Johntay Cook II, who parted ways with the program earlier in the season, is also officially listed in the portal looking for his next destination.

Roster Implications

These moves open up additional scholarship spots for Head Coach Steve Sarkisian as he looks to reinforce the roster for the 2026 campaign. The Longhorns are expected to be active in the portal themselves, particularly targeting defensive depth and offensive line help.

This tracker will be updated as more news develops.
