'We Are Playing to Win': Sarkisian, Longhorns Committed to Citrus Bowl Clash
Steve Sarkisian shuts down rumors of mass opt-outs ahead of the Citrus Bowl matchup with Michigan, emphasizing the opportunity to secure a 10-win season.
Despite the disappointment of missing the College Football Playoff, Texas Head Coach Steve Sarkisian made one thing clear on Tuesday: The Longhorns are not checking out.
Speaking to the media ahead of the upcoming Cheez-It Citrus Bowl matchup against the Michigan Wolverines, Sarkisian dispelled rumors of mass player opt-outs and emphasized the importance of finishing the season strong, especially coming off the emotional high of their 27-17 victory over Texas A&M in the season finale.
No Opt-Outs Expected
Sarkisian stated that he hasn't heard of any players intending to sit out, emphasizing the maturity of the group and the opportunity to achieve a 10-win season against a high-profile opponent like Michigan.
Sarkisian's comments stand in stark contrast to other programs dealing with roster depletion during bowl season. The team is keen to capitalize on the momentum from the Lone Star Showdown, where the defense stifled the Aggies' high-powered attack.
Injury Updates
The coach did address the status of star linebacker Anthony Hill Jr., who missed the A&M game with a hand injury. Sarkisian noted that Hill is considered day-to-day and intends to play if medically cleared.
The Matchup
The Citrus Bowl presents a classic clash of styles. Michigan's physical, run-first approach will test a Texas defense that just held A&M to under 300 yards. Offensively, Arch Manning (2,800+ passing yards, 28 TDs) will get another chance to showcase his growth against an elite Big Ten defense.
Kickoff is set for December 31 in Orlando.
