Aggies Fall Short: Miami Ends Texas A&M's Historic Season in 10-3 Defensive Battle
In a defensive slugfest at Kyle Field, Texas A&M's playoff run ends with a 10-3 loss to Miami. Marcel Reed's turnovers and a late Hurricanes TD seal the Aggies' fate.
COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The first College Football Playoff game utilizing the home-site format provided an electric atmosphere at Kyle Field, but the result was heartbreak for the 12th Man.
In a game dominated by defense, the No. 7 Texas A&M Aggies fell to the No. 10 Miami Hurricanes 10-3, ending their historic 2025 season with an 11-2 record.
Defensive Struggle
From the opening kickoff, yards were hard to come by. Both defensive fronts controlled the line of scrimmage, forcing a scoreless first half that featured eleven combined punts. Texas A&M’s defense, led by Shemar Turner and Nic Scourton (before his departure), constantly pressured Miami’s backfield but couldn't force the critical turnover needed to flip the field.
"They were able to find a drive, and we were able to respond, and we just weren't able to finish," said A&M Head Coach Mike Elko. "We came up five yards short. That's something we'll have to live with throughout the offseason."
Offensive Woes
The Aggies' offense, which had averaged over 35 points per game during their 11-win campaign, sputtered throughout the afternoon. Quarterback Marcel Reed, who had announced his return for 2026 just weeks prior, struggled to find rhythm against Miami’s athletic secondary.
Reed finished 25-of-39 for 237 yards but committed three costly turnovers—two interceptions and a critical fumble in the red zone.
"I think I had a pretty decent season, definitely better than last year and there's room to grow for sure," Reed reflected postgame, acknowledging the tough finish. Elko defended his sophomore signal-caller, noting, "He's still a young quarterback, I still think there's a lot of room for development and growth."
With leading rusher Le'Veon Moss sidelined (ankle), the Aggies rushed for just 74 yards as a team.
The Turning Point
Tied 3-3 with under four minutes remaining, Miami mounted the game's only touchdown drive. Hurricanes running back Mark Fletcher Jr., who finished with a career-high 172 yards, broke loose for a 45-yard gain to put Miami in striking distance.
Three plays later, with 1:52 on the clock, Miami quarterback Cam Ward found Malachi Toney for an 11-yard touchdown strikes towards the back pylon, silencing the crowd of 102,000.
A&M’s final drive stalled at midfield as Reed’s desperation heave on 4th-and-15 was intercepted by Bryce Fitzgerald, sealing the victory for the Hurricanes.
Season in Review
Despite the bitter ending, the 2025 season remains a landmark achievement for Texas A&M. The Aggies:
- Won 11 games for the first time since 2012.
- Started 7-0 in SEC play.
- Hosted the first-ever on-campus College Football Playoff game in Texas.
"We were not an elite program ready to compete for a national championship when we took over; we're still not," Elko said candidly. "We've got a lot of work to do to continue to develop this program into what ultimately it needs to become."
Texas A&M enters the offseason with optimism, retaining key pieces like Reed and a top-ranked recruiting class, but the sting of what could have been will linger at Kyle Field.
