Mustang Stampede: SMU Reloads with Power 4 Talent in Late Window
Rhett Lashlee and SMU capitalized on the late transfer window, signing eight players in four days including talent from Alabama, FSU, and Texas A&M.
The transition to the ACC was supposed to be a learning curve. Instead, Rhett Lashlee is using it as a recruiting pitch. In a frenetic four-day span from January 10th to 13th, the SMU Mustangs signed eight transfer players, almost exclusively from traditional Power 4 powerhouses.
The "SEC-to-ACC" Pipeline
The most striking trend in SMU's winter window has been the influx of talent from the SEC.
- Jalen Hale (WR, Alabama): Perhaps the jewel of the class, Hale brings elite speed and pedigree from Tuscaloosa. With SMU's air-raid concepts, he projects as an immediate deep threat.
- Theo Melin Ohrstrom (TE, Texas A&M): The Aggies' tight end room was crowded, and SMU capitalized. Ohrstrom brings a physical blocking presence paired with receiving upside.
- Jamal Anderson (LB, Clemson): Landing a linebacker developed in Dabo Swinney's system is a massive coup for the Mustangs' defense.
Revamping the Offense
While Preston Stone remains the field general, his weaponry has been upgraded significantly.
- Kendrick Raphael (RB, Cal): Raphael rushed for over 900 yards in the ACC last season. His arrival cushions the blow of losing Chris Johnson Jr. and provides a proven bell-cow back.
- Randy Pittman Jr. (TE, FSU): Pairing Pittman with Ohrstrom completely remakes the tight end room. Pittman is a dynamic receiving threat who creates mismatches against linebackers.
The Strategy: "Plug and Play"
SMU isn't recruiting for development; they are recruiting for 2026. Every incoming transfer has played significant snaps at the Power 4 level. This "plug and play" strategy mirrors what Lashlee accomplished in 2024 and 2025, but the caliber of athlete has noticeably risen.
With these additions, SMU signals that they aren't just happy to be in the ACC—they intend to contend for it.
