Official: Will Muschamp Returns as Defensive Coordinator
Former Texas DC and head coach-in-waiting Will Muschamp returns to Austin to lead the Longhorns defense, replacing Pete Kwiatkowski.
AUSTIN, Texas — A familiar face is returning to the Texas sidelines. On Thursday, Head Coach Steve Sarkisian officially announced the hiring of Will Muschamp as the Longhorns' new Defensive Coordinator.
Muschamp, 54, replaces Pete Kwiatkowski, who was not retained following the regular season. This marks Muschamp's second stint in Austin; he previously served as the defensive coordinator and head coach-in-waiting under Mack Brown from 2008 to 2010.
A Proven Track Record
Known for his fiery demeanor and aggressive defensive schemes, Muschamp has consistently produced elite defenses throughout his career. During his first tenure at Texas, his units consistently ranked in the top 10 nationally in total defense and scoring defense.
"Will is one of the premier defensive minds in college football," Sarkisian said in a statement. "He understands this program, he understands the SEC, and he knows what it takes to win championships."
Immediate Impact
Muschamp takes over a unit that showed promise but struggled with consistency in 2025, finishing 36th in total defense. His immediate task will be preparing the defense for the upcoming Cheez-It Citrus Bowl against Michigan, a team known for its physical rushing attack.
With the recent signing of a top-ranked recruiting class featuring 5-star defenders like Richard Wesley and Jonah Williams, Muschamp will have an influx of elite talent to mold in the coming years.
The hire has generated significant buzz among the fanbase, hoping that "Coach Boom" can restore the "D-BU" tradition to championship glory.
