Duke Carlisle, the quarterback of Texas’ 1963 national championship team, died on October 2 in Lockhart, Texas. He was 84.
A place in Texas football history
Carlisle led the Longhorns to the program’s first national championship. Texas Athletics remembers him as an Academic All-American and the team’s most valuable player. His final college game was the 1964 Cotton Bowl against Navy, where he earned the offensive MVP award.
That championship season remains a central part of the program’s history. Carlisle’s death is a loss for the Texas football community as the current Longhorns prepare for another game at the Cotton Bowl, this time against Oklahoma on October 10.
